What’s happening?
Until now, Cash App and Afterpay were two separate brands in the U.S. We’re bringing our platforms together and creating more opportunities for merchants to grow their business.
In March 2025, Afterpay will now be available to millions of Cash App customers. This requires a short update from our merchants to update their checkouts.
What’s changing for merchants?
There will be changes to the Afterpay logo and messaging to highlight new payment options, allowing customers to choose between Cash App or Afterpay.
Merchants will be required to make a simple update:
- Shopify merchants: Need to update their Afterpay app
- Non-Shopify merchants: Update the checkout button
How are we communicating this to merchants?
We will notify all US merchants to explain what is happening. 7 x emails in total will be sent between January and April:
- 4 x emails sent prior to 17 March
- 1 x initial email
- 2 x reminder emails
- 1 x SMB Newsletter
- 3 x additional emails sent post 17 March:
- Your checkout button has changed to $Afterpay
- Marketing Resources Center promotion - download our new assets
- FOMO message to align with the timings of the consumer campaign
Shopify Merchants
On Jan 22, 2025 Shopify merchants (SMBs & mid market) will receive email comms advising them they need to update their Afterpay app.
Non-Shopify Merchants
On Feb 5, 2025 Non-Shopify merchants will receive their initial email comms advising them they need to update the checkout button.
What will Merchant Admin vs TAM help with?
There will be no individualised TAM assistance for SMB or PSMB. They will be directed to our new API documentation expected to go live on 22nd Jan 2025. There will be a full Shopify new integration guide and a full migration guide located within the new Cash App Afterpay API documentation.
What will the new checkout experience look like?

What happens if a merchant does not install the new Afterpay pp?
- They will still be able to process orders and refunds as they do today however the existing Bondi Mint branding will be presented at checkout.
When the new app is installed, how will this impact refunds?
- As long as the old app that has orders still within the merchant’s return window is installed but in a deactivated state, the merchant will still be able to process refunds via the old app. Deactivating the app only removes the payment option from checkout however orders will not be impacted. If the merchant uninstalls the app then functionality relating to refunds or voids will no longer be available.
What happens if a merchant accidentally uninstalled the previous app?
- They will need to reinstall the old app and leave it in a deactivated state. This will allow them to continue to process refunds as they do today for orders placed while the merchant was still on the previous app. Payments for each order are associated with a unique identifier for the payment app that processed the transaction. The identifier is for the app so installing the same app again without reactivation will restore the refund functionality for the merchant.
- Merchants will need to reach out to Merchant Services who will send them a link that will facilitate re-installing the previous app.
What happens if both apps are installed and activated?
- Both brands will show on the merchant payment page i.e. the $Afterpay brand in the U.S and the Afterpay Bondi brand.
What do merchants do if they have cross border enabled?
- They can install the new $Afterpay App and CBT functionality will persist.
Refunds - I’m having trouble completing a refund, what should I do?
- If the payment was taken on the Afterpay payment gateway and you have uninstalled the app, you will have to reinstall the app. Follow these instructions to install the Afterpay app. You will not need to configure your Afterpay app again.
Please do not activate the Afterpay app (leave it deactivated).
Cross Border Trade (CBT) - are all customers available to use Cross Border Trade on my Shopify store?
- Cross Border Trade is available to Afterpay customers. It is not yet available to Cash App customers new to Afterpay.
- Before the customer checks out, they will see the appropriate brand for your shop’s region. When the customer is checking out, they will see the appropriate brand based on the region set associated with their Afterpay account.
- For example, if your store is set in US, and your customer is based in the Canada, they will see the following brands:
- On your Shopify store: Cash App Afterpay
During Afterpay checkout: Afterpay
