Afterpay Card is a feature to allow customers to pay in-store with Afterpay.
To shop in-store with Afterpay Card, consumers are required to have an NFC compatible mobile device. We understand that there are a small percentage of our customers whose devices are not NFC compatible, meaning that these customers will no longer be able to shop in-store with Afterpay without changing their handset.
NFC capability is now a widely supported handset feature on devices across a range of price points. We did not take the decision to remove barcode payments lightly; however, the overall benefits of Afterpay Card to our consumers and merchants means that this is the right change to make.
We believe that through the natural lifecycle of mobile devices and their replacement by consumers with newer models that the remaining customers will naturally move over to NFC enabled devices when the time is right for them. These customers will also continue to be able to use Afterpay at merchants online stores.
